Good to know

Turmeric and black pepper

Two spices you’ll recognise from the kitchen. In the capsules, they are present as extracts with a specified concentration.

Turmeric, the yellow root

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a plant of the ginger family native to South and South-East Asia. The part used is the rootstock, or rhizome. When dried and ground, it gives curry powder its yellow colour.

Curcumin, the yellow pigment

Curcumin is the best-known constituent of turmeric. The most important curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Curcumin is also used as the food colouring E 100.

Piperine from black pepper

Piperine is the substance that gives black pepper (Piper nigrum) its pungency. In our capsules, it is present as an extract from the pepper fruits.

Terms explained

What’s on the label

Curcumin, curcuminoids, 95%: you’ll come across these terms on the pouch. Here’s what they mean.

Curcuminoids

A collective term for the yellow pigments in turmeric, primarily curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Extracts are usually standardised for their total curcuminoid content, not for curcumin alone.

„95 %“

The turmeric extract contains 95% curcuminoids, while the pepper extract contains 95% piperine. These figures refer to the extract itself, not to the whole capsule: 400 mg of extract contains 380 mg of curcuminoids, while 5 mg of pepper extract contains 4.75 mg of piperine.

Extract and spice

Turmeric used as a spice contains significantly lower and varying levels of curcuminoids. Our extract is standardised to a specified content. Therefore, separate guidance on recommended intake applies to extracts.

Stains intensely

Curcuminoids are strong yellow dyes. Do not open the capsules: the contents may permanently stain fabrics, work surfaces and plastic.

Important information

What you should know before taking this product

This information is based on assessments by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). If you have any questions, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children

Do not take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. This product is intended for adults, not for children or adolescents.

Medicines

If you are taking medication, only use this product after consulting your doctor. This applies in particular to anticoagulants, cancer drugs and immunosuppressants. Curcumin and piperine may affect how the body absorbs and metabolises certain medicines.

Liver and gallbladder

Do not use if you have or have had liver disease, or if you have gallstones or bile duct disorders. Rare cases of liver damage have been reported in connection with turmeric supplements. If you experience yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual upper abdominal discomfort, stop taking the product immediately and seek medical advice without delay.

Do not double the dose

Stick to one capsule per day and do not take any other supplements containing curcumin or piperine. Turmeric used as a spice in normal quantities is not affected by this.
