Good to know
A brief overview of its name, structure and function in the body.
A name with a history
Coenzyme Q10 was first isolated in 1957. The name ubiquinone refers to its widespread occurrence.
Why ‘10’?
The number describes its structure: the molecule has a side chain consisting of ten identical building blocks, known as isoprene units.
Fat-soluble and produced naturally by the body
Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound that the body also produces itself.
What Q10 does in the body
Q10 is found in almost every cell in the body, particularly in the mitochondria, the ‘powerhouses’ of the cells. There, it forms part of the respiratory chain, through which cells generate energy in the form of ATP. Organs with high energy requirements, such as the heart, liver and kidneys, contain particularly high levels of it. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that additional intake via food supplements influences these processes; health claims regarding this are not permitted.
Understanding the label
Ubiquinone is the oxidised form of coenzyme Q10, ubiquinol the reduced form. Both occur in the body. We do not infer a better effect from the form.
Our capsules
Ubiquinone
The oxidised form of coenzyme Q10. Our Q10 raw material has a purity of over 99%.
Another form
Ubiquinol
The reduced form of coenzyme Q10.
When comparing
Pay attention to the information provided
Check the list of ingredients to see which form is contained and how much Q10 is stated per daily serving.
Diet
Organs such as the heart and liver are particularly rich in Q10, as are meat and fish. Plant-based sources include, in particular, vegetable oils, nuts and pulses. The average intake via food is estimated at 3 to 6 mg per day. No additional requirement can be derived from this.
Selected published measurements according to Pravst et al. (2010), converted to 100 g and rounded. The value for animal sources is the average of beef heart (11.3 mg), mackerel (4.3 mg), beef (4.0 mg) and chicken thighs (2.4 mg). The levels vary considerably. By way of comparison: to obtain 200 mg of Q10 – the amount contained in one capsule – one would theoretically need several kilograms of these foods. Our Q10 is derived from fermentation and is vegan.

Through fermentation. During this process, microorganisms produce the Q10, which is then purified.

Rice flour is naturally gluten-free and is considered to be well tolerated. The capsule contains no other fillers or anti-caking agents.
