Good to know
A climbing plant with distinctive thorns, the bark of which has long been used in South America.
A vine from the rainforest
Uncaria tomentosa is a woody climbing plant native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, such as the Amazon region. With its hook-shaped thorns, the vine clings to other plants and climbs upwards.
Where the name comes from
At the bases of the leaves are short, hook-shaped thorns that resemble cat’s claws. This is the origin of the German name and the Spanish term ‘Uña de gato’.
Related to coffee
Botanically, cat’s claw belongs to the madder family (Rubiaceae). This large plant family also includes, for example, the coffee plant.
Do not confuse
Various plants and products are marketed under the name ‘cat’s claw’. Here’s how to identify our powder.
Uncaria tomentosa
Our powder is derived from Uncaria tomentosa. The related species Uncaria guianensis is sometimes also referred to as cat’s claw. When comparing products, pay attention to the botanical name.
Not devil’s claw
Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a different plant native to southern Africa. It belongs to a different plant family and must not be confused with cat’s claw.
Inner bark
Our powder is made from the inner bark, i.e. the layer beneath the outer bark. It does not contain any root or leaves.
Powder, not an extract
The bark is dried and finely ground. In the case of an extract, however, soluble constituents would be extracted from the plant material using water or alcohol.
