Good to know

What is OPC?

Many people are familiar with OPC from adverts, but few know what it actually is. Here are the key facts in brief.

A plant compound from the polyphenol group

OPC stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins. They belong to the group of secondary plant compounds and are found, amongst other things, in grape seeds, the skins of red grapes, blueberries, cranberries and peanuts.

From grape seeds

An extract from the seeds of French grapes is used in our capsules. The seeds contain significantly more of these compounds than the pulp.

What can be said about OPC

There are currently no authorised health claims for OPC and grape seed extract in the EU, and there are no recommended intake levels. We therefore do not make any claims regarding the efficacy of OPC; instead, we provide the analytical values per capsule.

Understanding the label

How to interpret OPC information correctly

OPC products often feature several figures. Here’s how to interpret them.

Extract

400 mg of grape seed extract refers to the total amount of extract in one capsule. In addition to OPC, an extract also contains other plant compounds.

Total phenols

260 mg is an analytical reference value for the polyphenols in the extract, calculated as gallic acid. It does not indicate the exact mass of all polyphenols. OPCs belong to the polyphenol group.

OPC

236 mg is the analytical value for oligomeric proanthocyanidins. The exact value depends on the measurement method and the reference standard used.

Why it is difficult to compare figures

Depending on the analytical method, the values for the same extract can differ. OPC figures for different products are therefore only comparable to a limited extent without knowing the measurement method, even if they are given in milligrams.

What vitamin C contributes

Authorised claims for vitamin C

Diet first

Where OPC and vitamin C occur naturally

A varied diet rich in fruit, vegetables and nuts provides numerous phytochemicals. These foods are particularly good sources.

Red grapes

OPCs are found mainly in the seeds and skins of grapes.

Berries

Blueberries, cranberries and aronia berries are among the polyphenol-rich fruits and add plenty of colour to your plate.

Nuts

Peanuts with their skins and other nuts also provide polyphenols, as well as fibre and unsaturated fatty acids.

Vitamin C

Peppers, broccoli, citrus fruits, blackcurrants and kiwi fruit are good sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is sensitive to heat; more of it is retained when eaten raw or cooked briefly.
